India VIX Meaning: What It Shows and How to Read It
India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It turns the prices of Nifty options into one number: how much the market expects Nifty to move over the next 30 days, as an annual percentage. Use the calculator to turn today's VIX into an expected Nifty range.
This uses Nifty × VIX × √(days ÷ 365), a common shortcut. It describes the size of moves the market is pricing, not their direction.
What India VIX measures
NSE calculates India VIX from the order book of Nifty options, using out-of-the-money calls and puts of the near and next month expiries. The result is the volatility the market expects over the next 30 calendar days, quoted as an annual percentage. A VIX of 14 means the options market is pricing yearly volatility of about 14%.
VIX does not say whether Nifty will go up or down. It only says how big the swings are expected to be.
How to read high and low VIX
| VIX reading | What it usually means | For option prices |
|---|---|---|
| Low (calm) | The market expects small moves; often during steady uptrends | Premiums are cheaper; buyers pay less for time value |
| Rising | Fear or uncertainty is building, often ahead of events or during falls | Premiums rise across strikes, puts especially |
| High (stressed) | Big swings are expected; often after a sharp fall | Premiums are expensive; sellers collect more but carry more risk |
VIX tends to rise when Nifty falls sharply and drift lower when the market climbs slowly. It also tends to come back towards its usual range after spikes, which is why traders compare today's VIX with its own past rather than with a fixed number.
Turning VIX into a Nifty range
Because VIX is annual, scale it by the square root of time. Over 30 days: expected move ≈ Nifty × VIX% × √(30 ÷ 365). With Nifty at 23,000 and VIX at 14, that is about 23,000 × 0.14 × 0.287 ≈ 923 points. Roughly two times in three, Nifty would be expected to stay within that distance. For one day, divide VIX by √365 (about 19.1): VIX 14 implies a typical daily move of about 0.73%.
Using VIX in option trades
Buying options when VIX is high means paying for expensive volatility. If VIX falls, premiums can drop even if the market moves your way.
Selling options when VIX is low means collecting thin premiums for the same risk of a sudden move.
Strike selection: the VIX range gives a sense of how far away "far" really is for strangles and iron condors. Check strategies in the option strategies course.

What is India VIX in simple words?
A number from NSE that shows how much the market expects Nifty to move over the next 30 days, worked out from Nifty option prices. Higher VIX means bigger expected swings.
Is a high India VIX good or bad?
Neither on its own. High VIX means the market expects large moves, which usually comes with fear and falling prices. It makes options more expensive.
How is India VIX calculated?
NSE uses the bid and ask prices of out-of-the-money Nifty options in the near and next month expiries to compute the volatility expected over the next 30 calendar days, expressed as an annual percentage.
How do I convert VIX into a daily Nifty move?
Divide VIX by the square root of 365, about 19.1. A VIX of 16 implies a typical daily move of about 0.84%. Some traders use √252 trading days instead, which gives a slightly larger number.
Does India VIX predict market direction?
No. It measures expected size of moves, not direction. It often rises when the market falls because demand for protective puts goes up.
