Max Pain Calculator for Nifty and Stock Options
Max pain is the expiry price at which option buyers, taken together, would lose the most, and option writers would pay out the least. Type the call and put open interest for each strike from any option chain, and the calculator finds the max pain strike and shows the pain at every level.
The numbers below are a made-up sample to show how it works. Replace them with OI from the option chain (any unit, as long as calls and puts use the same one).
| Strike | Call OI | Put OI | Total pain |
|---|
Max pain uses only open interest. It says nothing about where the market will actually close.
How max pain is calculated
For each strike, assume the market expires exactly there. Work out what every in-the-money option would be worth: each call below that level pays (expiry level − strike) × call OI, and each put above it pays (strike − expiry level) × put OI. Add them up. That total is the "pain" paid to option buyers at that level. The strike with the smallest total is max pain.
Pain at level X = Σ call OI × max(X − strike, 0) + Σ put OI × max(strike − X, 0)
How traders read it
A pull towards the strike. Some traders believe large option writers defend their positions, which can keep the index near max pain into expiry. The effect, if any, is usually seen only near expiry.
Together with OI levels. The strike with the most call OI is often watched as resistance and the strike with the most put OI as support. Max pain usually sits between them.
It moves. Open interest changes through the day, so max pain can shift. Recalculate with fresh numbers rather than relying on a morning figure.
Limits worth knowing
Max pain is a theory, not a forecast. News, global markets and big flows move the index far more than option writers can. Use it as one input next to the put-call ratio, India VIX and price levels, and never as the only reason for a trade.

What is max pain in options?
The expiry price at which the total value of all open options, calls and puts together, is lowest. At that level option buyers as a group lose the most and writers pay out the least.
Is max pain accurate for Nifty?
It is not a prediction. The index sometimes expires near max pain and often does not. Treat it as a reading of positions, not a target.
Where do I get open interest data?
From the option chain on the NSE website or your broker's app, which list call and put OI for every strike of an expiry.
Should I include every strike?
Include the strikes with meaningful open interest around the current price. Far strikes with tiny OI barely change the result.
What is the difference between max pain and PCR?
PCR is total put OI divided by total call OI, a single sentiment ratio. Max pain uses OI at every strike to find one expiry level. The calculator shows both.
