Do I need experience on VRF systems to get a good AC technician job?
No, but it changes which employers can use you. Residential split and window work is the largest part of the market and is hired continuously. VRF, cassette and ducted work sits with commercial service teams and typically pays better, so state any exposure you have honestly - even assisting on commissioning is worth naming.
Should I list refrigerants on my resume?
Yes. R22, R32 and R410A behave differently, and a technician who names them is clearly describing real work rather than a course. It also tells a service manager which equipment generation you have been on, which they cannot infer from the trade certificate.
Is installation or service experience more valuable?
Neither outranks the other in general - they are different hires. Installation is project-driven and seasonal; service is year-round and diagnosis-heavy. Write whichever matches the advertisement first, and keep the other visible so you remain eligible for both.
How do I write field experience if I worked informally with a technician?
Describe it precisely: the units you worked on, the installation steps you performed yourself, the faults you were shown how to trace, and roughly how many jobs a week. Informal field experience is genuinely useful, and specific description is what makes an employer treat it seriously.
