Use this format freeWhat recruiters look for in a accountant resume
- Name your accounting software with the version — Tally ERP 9, Tally Prime, Zoho Books, SAP FICO. It is the most-searched term on accounting resumes.
- State the compliance work you handled independently. Filing GST yourself is a materially different claim from assisting someone who filed it.
- Give the scale of the books: turnover handled, number of entities, transaction volume. It tells the reader what level you operate at.
- Mention audits you have faced. Having sat through a statutory audit is a meaningful signal of reliability.
- Keep the layout strictly single-column. Accounting roles are often filled through older recruitment portals with weaker parsing.
ATS keywords for accountant roles
Applicant tracking systems match your resume against the job description before a person ever opens it. These are the terms that show up most often in accountant postings — use the ones that are genuinely true of you, in your own bullet points rather than in a keyword dump.
Common questions
Which software should an accountant resume mention?
Whichever you genuinely operate, named exactly — Tally ERP 9 or Tally Prime, Zoho Books, Busy, QuickBooks, or SAP FICO. Also list your Excel level specifically, since VLOOKUP and pivot table work is assumed in most accounting postings.
How do I show GST and TDS experience properly?
State the return types and the frequency: monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, quarterly TDS returns, annual filings. Add the number of entities or GSTINs you handled. This level of specificity is what separates a candidate who files from one who assists.
Do I need to be a CA to apply for accountant roles?
No. A large share of accounting positions in India are filled by B.Com and M.Com graduates with practical Tally, GST and reconciliation experience. A CA or CA-Inter qualification widens the range of roles available but is not a requirement for most accountant postings.
