Biodata Format for Experienced Candidates
Once you have a work history, the centre of the document shifts from your education table to your employment table — and four fields appear that a fresher biodata never carries. Handled badly, those four fields are where negotiations go wrong before they start.
When this format is the right one
Mid-career applications to employers who work from biodata rather than resumes: PSUs, banks, schools and colleges, hospitals, manufacturing units and most administrative posts. It is also what many Indian HR departments circulate as a standard form when shortlisting for a lateral hire.

List every organisation with designation, period from and to, and two lines on responsibilities, most recent first. Once you have five or more years, school results come out of the education section entirely — keep degree and post-graduation only, and let the employment table carry the page.
Indian biodata for experienced candidates routinely asks for all three, and they are used to shortlist before anyone speaks to you. State current CTC as the actual figure, expected as a range or "negotiable", and notice period in days exactly as your contract says. Inflating the current figure is checked against your salary slips at offer stage.
Many formats have this column. Keep it factual and short — better opportunity, relocation, contract ended, organisation restructuring. Long explanations invite questions, and anything that reads as a complaint about a previous employer counts against you far more than the reason itself ever would.
Unlike a resume, an experienced biodata often names two referees with designation, organisation and contact. Ask each person first. A referee who is surprised by the call is worse than no referee at all.
What to get right
- Let the employment table lead. Past five years of experience, drop 10th and 12th results entirely — they take space from the section that now decides your shortlist.
- State current CTC accurately. It is verified against salary slips at offer stage, and a figure that does not match is the fastest way to lose an offer already made.
- Give notice period in days exactly as your contract states. Employers shortlist on it, and a vague "immediate" that turns out to be 90 days damages trust at the worst moment.
- Keep reason for leaving to four or five words, and never phrase it as a complaint. The reason itself rarely matters; how you describe a former employer always does.
- Ask your referees before naming them. A referee taken by surprise is worse than no referee listed at all.
Common questions
Should an experienced biodata still include 10th and 12th marks?
Beyond roughly five years of experience, no. Keep your degree and any post-graduation and let the employment table carry the document. School results stay only where a specific government or bank format sheet explicitly asks for them.
Do I have to write my current CTC on a biodata?
Most Indian biodata formats for experienced candidates ask for it, and it is used to shortlist before any conversation happens. State the real figure — it is checked against salary slips before an offer is finalised, and a mismatch at that stage costs the offer far more often than a modest current salary ever would.
How should I write reason for leaving?
Factually and in a few words: better opportunity, relocation, contract completed, organisation restructuring. Avoid detail and avoid anything that reads as criticism of a previous employer. Interviewers weigh the tone of that line more than its content.
How long should an experienced biodata be?
Two pages is acceptable and normal once you have several roles to list, since the employment table needs room. Beyond two pages, condense the oldest roles to a single line each rather than dropping them, so the timeline stays unbroken.
