Part-Time Jobs in Mumbai for Students: What Is Real and What to Avoid
Students in Mumbai do earn while they study, mostly in a few kinds of work: teaching, food and retail counters, events, and small office or online jobs. "Part-time job" is also the phrase fraudsters use most on WhatsApp and Telegram. This page covers the real options by age and schedule, the legal age limits, and how to spot the fake ones before you pay anything.

Real part-time options for students
Pick work that fits your college timetable. Weekend and evening shifts are easiest to manage.
| Work | Usually suits | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Home tuition or coaching-class assistant | 12th pass and college students strong in a subject | Evenings, 1 to 3 hours |
| Cafe, quick-service restaurant or food counter crew | Students 18 and above | Shifts, often evenings and weekends |
| Retail store or mall staff on weekends | Students 18 and above | Weekend shifts, festive season |
| Event, exhibition and promoter staff | Students who are comfortable talking to people | One-day or weekend events |
| Office assistant, data entry or calling (part-time) | College students with typing and Excel | Half-day shifts |
| Paid internship | College students in their field | Part-time or holidays |
| Freelance design, writing, video editing | Students with a portfolio | Flexible, project-based |
Age rules: after 10th, after 12th, in college
Under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, as amended in 2016, children under 14 may not be employed (with narrow exceptions such as helping a family business after school). Adolescents aged 14 to 18 may work, but not in hazardous occupations and processes.
In practice, most employers in shops, restaurants and offices hire part-timers who are 18 or older, and delivery work needs a valid driving licence. If you are under 18, tuition, helping at a family shop, and supervised event work are the realistic options; ask a parent to see any offer first.
How to find real openings
Walk in to cafes, stores and coaching classes near your college or home with a one-page resume and ask for the manager. Check your college placement or internship cell and notice board. Use job portals with "part time" and your area name, and apply on the company's own page where there is one.
Ask before you start: the pay per hour or per shift, when it is paid, the shift timings, and whether you get anything in writing.
Part-time job scams
The common fake: a message offers "part-time work from home" for liking videos, rating hotels or reviewing products. You are paid small amounts at first, then asked to deposit money for a bigger "task" or to "unlock" your earnings, and the money is gone. In December 2023 the central government (MeitY) blocked more than 100 websites running these task-based job frauds.
A real part-time job never asks you to pay to join, to buy a kit, or to deposit money to withdraw what you earned. If you have paid, stop, keep the screenshots, and report it on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.

Common questions
Can a 10th pass student get a part-time job in Mumbai?
Options are limited under 18: home tuition for younger children, helping in a family shop, or supervised event work. Most shops, cafes and offices hire part-timers who are 18 or older.
What part-time jobs can college students do in Mumbai?
Tuition, cafe and food-counter crew, weekend retail, event and promoter work, part-time office or data entry work, paid internships, and freelance design, writing or video editing.
Are work-from-home part-time jobs real?
Some freelance and internship work is real and comes from a named company or client. Any "task" job that asks you to deposit money is a fraud.

Yes, a one-page resume with your college, skills and the hours you are free makes a walk-in much easier.
