Who hires security guards
Most guards in Mumbai work for a private security agency that supplies guards to a society, office or factory. Private security agencies must hold a licence under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 (PSARA). Ask the agency for its PSARA licence number; a real agency has one.
In Greater Mumbai and Thane district there is also a Security Guards Board, set up under the Maharashtra Private Security Guards (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1981. It registers security guards and the employers who take guards through it. Both routes are legal; ask which one an offer is.
8-hour duty or 12-hour duty
Postings offer both. 12-hour shifts (8 am to 8 pm, or 8 pm to 8 am) are common in societies; 8-hour duty is more common in offices, banks and malls. The posted pay is for the duty length written on it, so compare 8-hour offers with 8-hour offers.
Ask how many days a month you work, what the weekly off is, how overtime is paid, and whether duty rotates between day and night.
Eligibility and training under the law
Under PSARA, a private security guard must be at least 18 and not more than 65 years old, and the agency must satisfy itself about the guard's character and antecedents, which is why agencies ask for police verification.
The central model rules under PSARA set the training: 100 hours of classroom training and 60 hours of field training, spread over at least 20 working days. Ex-servicemen and ex-police personnel need a shorter condensed course (40 hours classroom and 16 hours field). The same rules set physical standards such as height and eyesight; the agency will tell you the ones it checks.
Women security guards
Many malls, hospitals, schools and offices hire women guards for frisking and front-desk duty. In shops and establishments in Maharashtra, a woman may work between 9.30 pm and 7 am only with her written consent, and the employer must provide safe transport to her doorstep. Ask about shift timings and transport before you accept a night post.
Accommodation offers
Some agencies offer a room or a shared stay for guards from outside Mumbai. Ask where it is, how many share it, and whether rent or food is deducted from your pay, and get the answer written in the offer.
