How the interview usually runs
For customer support and other non-IT roles, candidates commonly describe an HR round, an English and communication assessment (often a voice or versant-style test), sometimes a typing test for chat, and an operations round. For technical support and service desk roles, expect basic questions on computers, networks and troubleshooting as well.
IT fresher hiring for engineering graduates runs through its own campus and off-campus process with aptitude, coding and technical rounds. This page focuses on the support and process roles.
HR and customer support questions
Keep answers short and specific. The interviewer is also listening to how clearly you speak.
| Question | How to answer |
|---|---|
| Tell me about yourself. | Education, languages, one strength for support work (clear speech, patience, typing), and why this role. Under a minute. |
| Why Tech Mahindra? | A large IT and business services company with training for freshers and different processes to grow into. Mention the role you applied for. |
| What is customer service to you? | Solving the customer's problem on the first contact where possible, politely, and following the process. |
| A customer is shouting about a wrong bill. What do you do? | Let them finish, apologise for the trouble, confirm the details, explain the fix or next step and the time it will take, then confirm they are satisfied. |
| Sell me this pen. | Ask what they need first, then link one or two features to that need, and close with a simple question. |
| Are you comfortable with rotational and night shifts? | Answer honestly and ask about shift timings and transport. |
| Where do you see yourself in two years? | Grown in the same process: a quality, trainer or team lead role, with better product knowledge. |
Technical support and service desk questions
These check basics, not engineering depth.
| Question | How to answer |
|---|---|
| What is an IP address? | A number that identifies a device on a network so data can reach it, for example 192.168.1.10. |
| What is the difference between RAM and ROM? | RAM is temporary working memory that clears when power is off. ROM keeps its data without power and holds start-up instructions. |
| A user says the internet is not working. How do you troubleshoot? | Check if other sites or devices work, check cables or Wi-Fi, restart the router and device, check the IP settings, then escalate with what you have already tried. |
| What is a ticket and what is an SLA? | A ticket records a user's issue from start to close. An SLA is the agreed time to respond and resolve, and each ticket is tracked against it. |
| What is the difference between a virus and a firewall? | A virus is harmful software. A firewall filters network traffic to block unwanted connections. |
| How do you explain a technical fix to a non-technical user? | Simple words, one step at a time, and confirm each step before the next. |
