ITI COPA Interview Questions and Answers

These are the questions an ITI COPA (Computer Operator and Programming Assistant) is asked at an office, a data-entry or back-office company, a school or hospital, a government contract post or an apprenticeship interview: computer basics, Windows, MS Office and Excel formulas, networking and the internet, HTML and databases, cyber safety, typing, and the practical test.

What the interviewer is checking

For most COPA jobs the work is office computer work: documents, spreadsheets, data entry, email and basic troubleshooting. The interviewer checks whether you can do it quickly and accurately, and whether you understand enough of networks and security to avoid causing problems.

Expect a short practical: type a passage, format a letter in Word, or make a small table with formulas in Excel.

COPA interview questions with answers

Computer basics

What is the difference between RAM and ROM?

RAM is the working memory: fast, temporary, and cleared when the computer is switched off. ROM holds permanent instructions such as the start-up firmware and is not erased when power is off.

What is an operating system? Give examples.

Software that manages the hardware and runs other programs. It handles files, memory, devices and users. Examples: Windows, Linux, macOS, Android.

What is the difference between an HDD and an SSD?

An HDD stores data on spinning magnetic disks; an SSD uses flash memory with no moving parts, so it is much faster and more shock-resistant, usually at a higher cost per GB.

Name some keyboard shortcuts you use every day.

Ctrl+C copy, Ctrl+X cut, Ctrl+V paste, Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+S save, Ctrl+P print, Ctrl+F find, Alt+Tab switch windows, Windows+L lock the computer.

How to say it: Mention Windows+L: locking your screen when you leave is a habit offices like.

MS Office and Excel

Which Excel formulas do you know?

SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, COUNTIF, MAX, MIN, IF, VLOOKUP (or XLOOKUP), CONCATENATE or TEXTJOIN, and TODAY. For example =VLOOKUP(A2, Sheet2!A:C, 3, FALSE) brings the third column for the value in A2 with an exact match.

How to say it: Explain one formula with an example rather than listing twenty.

What is the difference between a relative and an absolute cell reference?

A relative reference such as A1 changes when the formula is copied; an absolute reference such as $A$1 stays fixed. Use absolute when every row must refer to the same cell, such as a tax rate.

What is a pivot table?

A tool that summarises a large table (for example total sales by month and region) by dragging fields into rows, columns and values, without writing formulas.

What is mail merge in MS Word?

Creating many personalised letters, labels or envelopes from one Word document and a list of names and addresses in Excel or another data source.

Networking, internet and web

What is the difference between LAN, MAN and WAN?

A LAN connects computers in one building or office, a MAN covers a city, and a WAN covers a large area: the internet is the largest WAN.

What is an IP address?

A number that identifies a device on a network so data reaches it. An IPv4 address is 32 bits, written as four numbers from 0 to 255, such as 192.168.1.10.

What is the difference between a switch and a router?

A switch connects devices within the same local network. A router connects different networks (for example your office LAN to the internet), and directs traffic between them.

What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?

HTTPS is HTTP with encryption (TLS), so data between the browser and the website cannot be read in transit. Enter passwords and payment details only on HTTPS sites.

Name some basic HTML tags.

<html>, <head>, <title>, <body>, <h1> to <h6> for headings, <p> for a paragraph, <a> for a link, <img> for an image, <table>, <tr> and <td> for tables, and <form> and <input> for forms.

What is a primary key in a database?

A column (or set of columns) whose value uniquely identifies each row and cannot be empty: for example a roll number or an employee ID.

Cyber safety, typing and the practical

What is phishing, and how do you avoid it?

A fake email, SMS or website that tries to steal passwords, OTPs or money. Do not click unknown links, check the sender and the web address, never share an OTP, and report suspicious mails to IT.

How do you keep office data safe?

Use strong passwords and do not share them, lock the screen when away, keep antivirus and updates on, take regular backups, and do not plug in unknown pen drives.

What is your typing speed?

Give the speed you can show in a test (for example 35 words per minute in English), and the language and layout if you also type in Hindi or your state language.

How to say it: Never inflate this; many offices test it on the spot.

What is the usual practical test?

Typing a passage for speed and accuracy, formatting a letter or notice in Word, building a small Excel sheet with SUM, IF or VLOOKUP and a chart, or creating a simple HTML page.

How to say it: Save your file with a clear name before you hand it over.

Your answers to fill in and practise

Copy the lines that are true for you, replace every [bracket] and delete the rest. Every number should be one you can repeat in a practical test.

Common questions

What questions are asked in an ITI COPA interview?

Computer basics (RAM, ROM, OS, SSD), shortcuts, Excel formulas and pivot tables, mail merge, networking (LAN, IP address, router vs switch), HTTPS, HTML tags, databases, cyber safety, typing speed and a practical test. All are answered above.

Can I get these COPA interview questions as a PDF?

Open the page, choose Print in your browser menu, then Save as PDF. The page prints without menus.

Is this useful for a computer operator or data entry interview?

Yes. Office computer jobs ask the same Word, Excel, typing and safety questions; the computer operator biodata page covers the document.

What should I revise the night before?

RAM vs ROM, five shortcuts, VLOOKUP with an example, $A$1 vs A1, LAN/WAN, router vs switch, HTTPS and phishing.
