Mazagon Dock Apprentice for ITI Holders: Trades, Exam and Rules
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai trains apprentices at its Apprentice Training School every year. Unlike railway apprenticeships, MDL holds an online exam. This page uses the official rules for the 2026 intake (advertisement MDL_ATS/01/2026) to explain the trades, eligibility and selection for ITI holders.

MDL advertised 495 trade apprentice seats for 2026, with online applications from 11 June to 1 July 2026 on mazagondock.in (Careers, Online Recruitment, Apprentice). Seats are split into Group A for 10th pass, Group B for ITI pass and Group C for 8th pass.
Group B trades for ITI holders
Group B training lasts one year. The ITI trade you passed decides the trade you can apply for; ITI Fitter holders can also apply for Fitter Structural.

Eligibility
Group B needs an ITI pass in the trade from a government or government-recognised institute, with at least 50% aggregate (SC and ST need a pass). Candidates in their final ITI exam can apply if they pass on or before 1 October 2026. Age for Group B was 16 to 21 years, with 5 years extra for SC and ST, 3 for OBC and 10 for Divyang candidates.
The online exam
All eligible candidates take a computer-based test of 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours. For Group B it has 25 questions each on English and general knowledge, trade theory, workshop calculation and science, and engineering drawing. COPA candidates get 75 trade theory questions and 25 on English and general knowledge.
After the exam
Top scorers in each group and category are called for document verification. Without original documents for age, caste and qualification you cannot continue, and the next candidate is called. Selected candidates must be medically fit under the Apprenticeship Rules 1992 (any specialist tests such as an X-ray are at your cost), must register on apprenticeshipindia.gov.in, and get a monthly stipend under the Apprentices Act. MDL gives no hostel.
Fee
The application fee is ₹100 plus bank charges for General, OBC, SEBC, EWS and AFC candidates. SC, ST and Divyang candidates pay nothing but must upload their certificates.
