ITI Formative Assessment: What It Is and How It Is Marked
Formative assessment is the part of your ITI result that your own institute gives during the year, based on your work in the workshop and classroom. It has its own pass mark of 60%, and you need that 60% to get your hall ticket. This page explains what is assessed, what evidence counts, how marks are given, and what to do if your marks look wrong. The rules are from DGT's CTS curricula and July 2025 exam guidelines.

DGT's CTS curricula describe it as continuous internal assessment during the period of training, done by testing the assessment criteria listed against each learning outcome of your trade. Your institute must keep an individual portfolio for every trainee, and marks are recorded on the formative assessment template that DGT provides on bharatskills.gov.in.
What counts as evidence
The curricula list the kinds of evidence assessment can be based on. Keep each of these complete and neat, because they are your marks:
| Evidence | What to do |
|---|---|
| Jobs done in the lab or workshop | Finish each job to drawing and size; keep it until marked |
| Record book / daily diary | Write it up the same day, with drawings and results |
| Answer sheets of assessments | Keep your corrected sheets |
| Viva-voce | Be able to explain each job and its safety steps |
| Progress chart, attendance and punctuality | Attend regularly; attendance also decides the hall ticket |
| Assignments and project work | Submit on time with your name and date |
| CBT-style tests and practical tests | Practise with mock tests before internal tests |
The curricula also ask assessors to consider teamwork, avoiding and disposing of scrap correctly, attitude, sensitivity to the environment, safety and self-learning, and regularity in training.
How marks are given
The curricula describe marking bands: 60 to 75% for acceptable work done with occasional guidance and due regard for safety; above 75% to 90% for a reasonable standard with little guidance; and above 90% for high-quality work with minimal or no support. So a trainee who completes jobs safely and accurately with little help can expect the higher bands.
The 60% rule and your hall ticket
Section 2.4.1 of the curricula sets the minimum pass at 60% for Formative Assessment (the same as Trade Practical), and DGT's July 2025 exam guidelines list at least 60% in formative assessment, along with 80% attendance, as conditions for the hall ticket. Formative assessment also appears as a separate head on your statement of marks.
If your formative marks look wrong
Ask your trade instructor first, with your record book and job work, because the marks come from your institute's records. If it is not resolved, take it to the principal's office. The curricula require institutes to preserve formative assessment evidence until the next year's examination for audit and verification by the examination body, so the records should exist.
