ITI COPA Viva Questions and Answers

In the COPA practical, you do a task on the computer, such as an Excel sheet, a Word document or a simple web page, and the examiner then asks you to explain it. The questions below are the ones asked most often, with answers you can say in a sentence or two.

What the examiner checks

Whether your file is correct and saved properly, and whether you know why you used each function. Expect Excel formulas, Word formatting, file management, internet and basic networking questions.

Computer basics

What is the difference between RAM and ROM?

RAM is temporary working memory; its data is lost when power goes off. ROM is permanent memory that holds start-up instructions.

What is an operating system? Give examples.

Software that manages the hardware and runs other programs: Windows, Linux, macOS, Android.

What is the difference between hardware and software?

Hardware is the physical parts (CPU, keyboard, monitor); software is the programs and instructions that run on it.

What is the shortcut to copy, paste, undo and save?

Ctrl+C copy, Ctrl+V paste, Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+S save.

MS Word and PowerPoint

How do you make a table in Word?

Insert → Table, choose rows and columns. Use Table Design and Layout to format, merge cells or add rows.

What is mail merge?

A feature that creates many personalised letters or labels from one document and a list of names and addresses (for example from Excel).

What is a slide transition and an animation?

A transition is the effect when moving from one slide to the next; an animation is the effect on an object (text or picture) within a slide.

What does the SUM formula do and how do you write it?

Adds a range: =SUM(B2:B10).

What is the difference between relative and absolute cell reference?

A relative reference (A1) changes when the formula is copied; an absolute reference ($A$1) stays fixed.

How to say it: Show $ by example: =B2*$E$1.

What does the IF function do?

Returns one value if a condition is true and another if false: =IF(C2>=33,"Pass","Fail").

What is VLOOKUP?

Looks up a value in the first column of a table and returns a value from another column in the same row: =VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table, column_number, FALSE).

How do you sort and filter data?

Select the data, then Data → Sort to arrange it, or Data → Filter to show only the rows you want.

Internet, networking and HTML

What is an IP address?

A unique number that identifies a device on a network, such as 192.168.1.10 (IPv4).

What is the difference between LAN, MAN and WAN?

LAN covers a room or building, MAN a city, and WAN a country or the world (the internet is the largest WAN).

What is HTML? Name a few tags.

HyperText Markup Language, used to build web pages. Tags: <html>, <head>, <title>, <body>, <h1>, <p>, <a>, <img>, <table>.

What is a firewall?

Hardware or software that filters network traffic to block unauthorised access.

What is the difference between a virus and an antivirus?

A virus is harmful software that spreads and damages files; an antivirus detects and removes it.
