How the practical is set and marked

Electrician is one of the seven trades for which DGT sends one uniform practical paper to every ITI (DGT's guidelines for the All India Trade Test of July 2026). The pass mark is 60% of the practical marks, and the examiner checks your training portfolio before giving marks.

The jobs below come from the learning outcomes in the Electrician CTS 2.0 curriculum (revised July 2022). The exact job on your paper is set fresh each year, so practise the whole list.

Electrician practical jobs and what is checked

First year jobs

Make wire joints, solder and crimp lugs.

Common joints are the twisted (Western Union), married and T joints. The examiner checks a tight joint with no loose strands, clean soldering, insulation restored and lugs crimped with the right tool.

How to say it: Name each joint as you make it.

Measure the insulation resistance of a cable.

Use a megger between conductor and armour or earth, and between conductors. Note the reading and say whether it is acceptable for the cable.

Wire a circuit on a board: lamp controlled from two places, or a distribution board.

Staircase (two-way) wiring is a favourite. Checked: correct circuit, phase through the switch, neat runs, tight terminals, earth connected, and a test before switching on.

Prepare and test an earthing installation.

Pipe or plate earthing as per the drawing, then measure the earth resistance with an earth tester and record it.

Take measurements with analog and digital meters.

Voltage, current, power and energy, with the meter on the right range and connected the right way (ammeter in series, voltmeter in parallel).

Test a transformer.

Polarity, ratio, open circuit and short circuit tests, with readings written in a table.

Second year jobs

Connect and run a three-phase induction motor through a DOL or star-delta starter.

Checked: correct power and control wiring, overload set, motor runs in the right direction, and you can reverse it by swapping two phases.

Start and test a DC machine.

Connect the starter correctly, run the motor, and take a load or speed test if asked.

Rewind a small motor or fan.

Record the old winding data first (turns, gauge, slots), then rewind, insulate, varnish and test for continuity and insulation.

Wire a control panel.

Contactors, timers, push buttons and indicating lamps as per the circuit, with ferrules and neat dressing.

Find a fault in an inverter, stabiliser, battery charger or emergency light.

Test step by step from the supply, name the faulty part and replace it.

Before you start the job

Copy the lines that are true for you, replace every [bracket] and delete the rest. Every number should be one you can repeat in a practical test.
