ITI Practical Exam: Marks, Pass Rule and How It Works

The practical exam is the part of the All India Trade Test where you make a job in the workshop or lab, and it needs the highest score of any head: 60%. This page explains who sets the paper, how marks are given and uploaded, what you need before the exam, and links trade-wise practical and viva questions.

The pass mark is 60%

Section 2.4.1 of every CTS curriculum says the minimum pass percent for Trade Practical and Formative Assessment is 60%, and 33% for every other subject. So if your practical is out of 250 marks you need 150, out of 100 you need 60. Your statement of marks prints the maximum and minimum for each head.

There is no pass mark on the total. A trainee who scores well in theory still fails the year if the practical is below 60%.

Who sets the practical paper in 2026

DGT's guidelines for the All India Trade Test of July 2026 say DGT shares one centralised, uniform practical question paper for the seven trades with the highest enrolment: Electrician, Fitter, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, COPA, Welder and Mechanic Diesel. This follows a DGT order dated 23 May 2025.

For every other trade, the State Directorate sets the practical paper at state level. NSTIs use the state paper, or set their own for a trade that no other ITI in the state runs.

Where it happens and how marks are given

Under a DGT order of 19 December 2019 every ITI is its own centre for the practical exam, unless the state committee picks another centre. The examiner enters your attendance and practical marks on the Skill India Digital Hub within 48 hours of the exam.

The curriculum also says the examiner checks your training portfolio (your record of jobs and assessments) before giving practical marks. Keep your record book or practical file complete and signed.

Before the exam: hall ticket conditions

DGT's guidelines for the All India Trade Test of July 2026 list three conditions for the hall ticket: attendance of at least 80%, formative assessment marks of at least 60%, and the CBT and practical exam fees paid. A principal can relax attendance under a 2017 MSDE order. The CBT fee is ₹213 per trainee, paid online (gateway charges extra).

Marksheets and certificates are not issued until your ITI enters your On the Job Training or project marks, so make sure that is done too.

Trade-wise practical and viva questions

The practical pages below list the jobs the curriculum trains you for, with what the examiner checks. The viva pages list the questions asked about your job.

Common questions

What is the passing mark in the ITI practical exam?

60% of the maximum marks for Trade Practical. That is 150 out of 250, 60 out of 100, or 30 out of 50.

Is the ITI practical paper the same in every state?

For Electrician, Fitter, Electronics Mechanic, MMV, COPA, Welder and Mechanic Diesel, DGT sends one uniform paper. For other trades the State Directorate sets it, so it can differ by state.

Where is the practical exam held?

Usually at your own ITI, which DGT treats as the exam centre, unless the state committee chooses another centre.

What do I need to sit the practical exam?

A hall ticket, which needs at least 80% attendance, at least 60% in formative assessment and the exam fees paid. Carry your record book or practical file too, because the examiner checks your portfolio.

When does the practical result come?

The examiner uploads the marks within 48 hours of the exam, but you see them in the final result with the CBT on the Skill India Digital Hub.
