ITI Fitter Practical Exam Questions and Jobs

In the fitter practical you make a fitting job from a drawing, to a tolerance, and the examiner measures it and asks how you made it. These are the jobs the DGT curriculum trains you for, with the accuracy each one asks for.

How the practical is set and marked

Fitter is one of the seven trades for which DGT sends one uniform practical paper to every ITI (DGT's guidelines for the All India Trade Test of July 2026). The pass mark is 60% of the practical marks, and the examiner checks your training portfolio before giving marks.

The jobs and tolerances below come from the learning outcomes in the Fitter CTS 2.0 curriculum (revised July 2022). Your paper gives the actual drawing and sizes.

Fitter practical jobs and what is checked

First year jobs

Make a job by marking, hacksawing, chiselling, filing, drilling and tapping.

The curriculum asks for basic fitting accuracy of ±0.25 mm. Checked: sizes, flatness and squareness, a clean tapped thread and deburred edges.

How to say it: Say which file you used for roughing and which for finishing.

Make a sliding, step, T, square, angular or profile fit.

The curriculum tolerance for these fits is ±0.04 mm and 30 minutes on angles. Checked: both pieces to size, the fit slides in both ways (interchangeable) without a gap you can see against light.

Drill, ream and tap holes and check them.

Correct drill size for the tap, holes at the right centres, and sizes checked with a vernier or micrometer.

Do simple lathe work.

Facing, plain and step turning, chamfering, grooving, knurling and an external V thread, as in the curriculum.

Second year jobs

Make a dovetail, radius or combined fitting.

The second-year tolerance is ±0.02 mm and 10 minutes on angles. Checked: the fit, the finish, and dowel pins or screws placed correctly.

Make a snap gauge or gap gauge.

Accuracy of ±0.02 mm. The examiner checks the gauge with slip gauges or a micrometer.

Make pipe joints and test them.

Cut, thread, bend or flare the pipe, fit valves and fittings, and test for leakage.

Make a drill jig and use it.

The jig must locate the job the same way every time, so drilled holes are in the same position on each piece.

Before you start the job

Copy the lines that are true for you, replace every [bracket] and delete the rest. Every number should be one you can repeat in a practical test.
