ITI Passing Marks: Theory, Practical, CBT and Formative Assessment

There is no single pass mark for the whole ITI exam. Each head on your statement of marks has its own minimum: 33% for theory and the other subjects, and 60% for trade practical and formative assessment. You must clear every head separately. Below are the rules as DGT writes them, with the marks they work out to and what changes for the computer-based test.

The pass rule, in DGT's words

The Craftsmen Training Scheme curricula published by the Directorate General of Training state the rule in section 2.4.1: "The minimum pass percent for Trade Practical and Formative assessment is 60% & for all other subjects is 33%." It applies to NCVT trades under the Craftsmen Training Scheme, whether the trade is one year or two years long.

HeadPass %Max 250Max 100Max 50
Trade Practical60%1506030
Formative Assessment60%1506030
Trade Theory33%833317
Employability Skills33%833317
Workshop Calc. & Science, Engg. Drawing (if separate)33%833317

The last three columns are the pass marks when that head is out of 250, 100 or 50 marks.

33% of 50 is 16.5; statements of marks print the pass mark as 17. Your own marksheet prints the maximum and the minimum pass marks for every head. Those printed numbers are the ones that decide your result.

The computer-based test (CBT): 150 marks

DGT's examination guidelines for July 2025 set the CBT at two hours, 75 questions, 150 marks, two marks a question. Trade Theory is 100 marks and Employability Skills is 50 marks. In engineering trades the 100-mark Trade Theory paper includes the workshop science and calculation and engineering drawing questions (38 + 6 + 6 questions).

The same guidelines state: "The minimum passing percentage for both Trade Theory and Employability Skills is 33%." So in the CBT you need at least 33 out of 100 in Trade Theory and at least 17 out of 50 in Employability Skills. Each one on its own.

Before the exam: attendance and formative assessment

You only get a hall ticket if you meet two conditions in DGT's July 2025 guidelines: attendance of at least 80%, and at least 60% in Formative Assessment. A principal can relax the attendance condition under a separate MSDE order, but the 60% formative assessment requirement is listed as a condition for the exam.

Is there a pass mark "out of 600"?

No. A first-year total of 600 or a second-year total of 700 is the sum of all the heads, but you do not pass on the total. You pass when every head is at or above its own minimum. A trainee can score well overall and still fail a year by missing the 60% in practical.

To work out your percentage from the totals, and to check every head against its pass mark automatically, use the ITI percentage calculator linked below.

Two-year trades: how the final result is counted

DGT's curricula say that for two-year courses, 50% weightage is applied to each year's examination when working out the overall result, and 100% for six-month and one-year courses. So a two-year trainee's overall percentage is the average of the two yearly percentages, not the sum of all marks divided by the sum of all maximums.

Writing your result on a resume or biodata

Copy the lines that are true for you, replace every [bracket] and delete the rest. Every number should be one you can repeat in a practical test.

Certificate lines with the result

If you cleared a head on a later attempt

Write the year your certificate shows. You do not need to mention the attempt on a resume; if a form asks, answer it truthfully.

Common questions

What are the passing marks in ITI?

33% in Trade Theory, Employability Skills and the other subjects, and 60% in Trade Practical and Formative Assessment, per DGT's CTS curricula. Each head must be passed separately.

ITI passing marks kitna hai? (How many marks do I need to pass?)

Theory mein 33% aur practical mein 60%. In the CBT that means at least 33 out of 100 in Trade Theory and 17 out of 50 in Employability Skills; in practical, 60% of the maximum printed on your marksheet, for example 150 out of 250.

What are the passing marks in the ITI CBT exam?

The CBT is 150 marks: Trade Theory 100 and Employability Skills 50. DGT's July 2025 guidelines set the minimum at 33% for both, so 33 and 17.

Are first-year and second-year passing marks different?

The percentages are the same in both years: 33% for theory heads and 60% for practical and formative assessment. The maximum marks for each head can differ by year and trade, so check your own statement of marks.

Is there any condition before the exam?

Yes. DGT's July 2025 guidelines require at least 80% attendance and at least 60% in Formative Assessment for a hall ticket.
