ITI Exam Pattern 2026: CBT, Theory, Practical and Total Marks
The ITI final exam (the All India Trade Test for the National Trade Certificate) has a computer-based test for theory, a practical exam, and marks from formative assessment done at your ITI during the year. This page sets out each part, how many questions and marks it carries, how it is passed, and what you need before you can sit it. The rules are from DGT's CTS curricula and its July 2025 examination guidelines.

Your result is built from three kinds of assessment. Formative assessment is continuous internal assessment by your institute during the year. The summative assessment at the end of the year is the All India Trade Test, conducted by DGT's Controller of Examinations: a computer-based test (CBT) for theory and a practical examination. The practical examiner also checks your training portfolio before giving practical marks.
The CBT: 75 questions, 150 marks
DGT's July 2025 guidelines set the CBT at two hours, 75 multiple-choice questions and 150 marks, two marks a question.
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Minimum to pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trade Theory | 50 | 100 | 33 |
| of which, in engineering trades: Workshop Calculation and Science | 6 | 12 | part of Trade Theory |
| of which, in engineering trades: Engineering Drawing | 6 | 12 | part of Trade Theory |
| Employability Skills | 25 | 50 | 17 |
| Total | 75 | 150 | each paper passed separately |
The guidelines state that the minimum passing percentage for both Trade Theory and Employability Skills is 33%, so each is passed on its own: 33 out of 100 and 17 out of 50.
Practical and formative assessment
Trade Practical and Formative Assessment are passed at 60%, under section 2.4.1 of the CTS curricula. Their maximum marks are printed on your statement of marks and can differ by trade and year, so use your own marksheet; for example, 60% of 250 is 150.
Formative assessment marks come from your ITI's internal assessment during the year, recorded on the formative assessment template that DGT publishes on bharatskills.gov.in.
Before the exam: attendance and formative assessment
DGT's July 2025 guidelines make two conditions for the hall ticket: attendance of at least 80%, and at least 60% in formative assessment. A shortfall in either can stop you sitting the exam, so check both with your ITI well before the exam month.
How the total is counted
You pass each head separately; there is no single pass mark on the total. For one-year courses the year's result is the result. For two-year courses DGT applies 50% weightage to each year's examination, so your overall percentage is the average of the two yearly percentages.
Hours behind the exam (example: COPA)
The curriculum also shows how training time is split. In COPA's CTS 2.0 curriculum, a year has 840 hours of trade practical, 240 hours of trade theory and 120 hours of employability skills (1,200 hours), plus 150 hours of on-the-job training or a group project. Other trades have their own split in their curricula.
