ITI Apprentice Interview Questions and Answers
Companies that take ITI apprentices, such as auto plants, engineering firms and shipyards, often hold a short interview before engagement. They want to know that you understand basic trade work and safety, that you will turn up on time for shifts, and that you can learn. These are the questions asked most often.

Check my resume freeWhat the interviewer is checking
An apprentice is a trainee, so nobody expects factory experience. The interviewer checks basic trade knowledge from your ITI, safety habits, and whether you will stay for the full training period.
Railway apprenticeships have no interview: selection is on merit and document verification. Private companies and some PSUs do hold one.
ITI apprentice interview questions with answers
About you
Tell me about yourself.
Name, ITI trade, institute and passing year, two jobs you made or skills you learnt in the workshop, and that you want to learn on the shop floor. Keep it under a minute.
How to say it: Practise this aloud until it sounds natural.
Why do you want an apprenticeship here?
To learn your trade on real production work, under experienced people, in a company that follows proper safety and quality systems.
Can you work in shifts?
Answer honestly. Most plants run shifts, so say yes if you can, and mention any real limit such as travel time.
Where do you see yourself after the apprenticeship?
Skilled in your trade, holding the National Apprenticeship Certificate, and ready for a technician or operator job.
Trade and workshop basics
Which measuring instruments have you used?
Steel rule, vernier caliper (least count 0.02 mm), outside micrometer (0.01 mm), try square and dial gauge for mechanical trades; multimeter, tester and megger for electrical trades.
What job did you make in your ITI practical?
Describe one job in order: drawing, material, tools, steps and the final check. Interviewers like a clear, real example.
What is the difference between a drawing's tolerance and its size?
The size is the dimension you aim for; the tolerance is how much above or below it is still accepted.
What is 5S?
A workplace method: sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain. It keeps the area clean, safe and organised.
Safety
Which safety gear do you use?
Safety shoes, goggles, gloves suited to the job, ear protection near loud machines and a helmet where the plant requires it.
What will you do if you see oil spilled on the floor?
Stop people walking there, clean it or report it at once, and put a warning sign if needed.
What is LOTO?
Lockout tagout: isolating a machine's power and locking it before maintenance so nobody can switch it on while you work.
Stipend and terms
Do you know the stipend for apprentices?
Say you know the legal minimum: The minimum stipend for an ITI pass apprentice is ₹9,600 a month from 11 September 2025, with 10% more in the second year, under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
Are you registered on the apprenticeship portal?
Say yes and give your registration number if you have done it; companies engage trade apprentices through the government portal, apprenticeshipindia.gov.in.
