Check my resume freeWhat the interviewer is checking
A contractor wants a wireman who wires safely, follows the drawing, and tests before handing over. Most questions check one of those.
For cable sizes, earthing values and breaker ratings, say "as per the load and the drawing". Do not guess a number you are not sure of.
Wireman interview questions with answers
Wiring and joints
Which wiring systems have you done?
Concealed conduit wiring in PVC pipe, surface conduit and casing-capping wiring. Name the one you did most and where.
How to say it: Talk about a real job you did in training.
Why does the switch go in the phase wire?
So the lamp or appliance is dead when the switch is off. A switch in the neutral leaves the holder live.
How do you wire a lamp controlled from two places?
Staircase wiring with two two-way switches: phase to the common of one switch, the two travellers between the switches, and the common of the second switch to the lamp.
Name some wire joints.
Twisted (Western Union) joint, married joint and T joint. Joints are made in a junction box, never inside a conduit.
Earthing and protection
Why is earthing done?
To give fault current a low-resistance path to earth so the protective device trips and a person touching the metal body does not get a shock.
Name the types of earthing.
Pipe earthing and plate earthing are the common ones. Earth resistance is measured with an earth tester.
What is the difference between an MCB and an RCCB?
An MCB trips on overload and short circuit. An RCCB trips on earth leakage current, which protects people from shock. Many boards use both.
What is the colour code for wires in a house?
In common house wiring, red for phase, black for neutral and green for earth; in three-phase work, red, yellow and blue for the three phases. Always follow the colour code on the drawing or the one the contractor uses.
Testing and tools
Which tests do you do before switching on a new installation?
Continuity of conductors, insulation resistance with a megger, polarity (switches in phase) and earth resistance.
How do you use a tester and a multimeter?
A neon tester only shows phase. A multimeter measures voltage, continuity and resistance; select the range before connecting.
Which tools do you carry?
Combination pliers, nose pliers, wire stripper, screwdrivers, line tester, multimeter, crimping tool, drill and a fish wire for pulling cable.
Safety
What safety do you follow on site?
Switch off, lock or tag the supply, test for dead, use insulated tools, wear rubber-soled shoes, and use a ladder properly when working at height.
What do you do if someone gets an electric shock?
Switch off the supply first, or separate the person with a dry wooden stick. Never touch them directly. Then call for help and give first aid.

Common questions
What questions are asked in an ITI wireman interview?
Wiring systems, staircase wiring, wire joints, earthing, MCB and RCCB, wire colours, tests before switching on, tools and safety.
Is the wireman interview the same as the electrician interview?
The basics overlap, but a wireman interview focuses on installation wiring, earthing and testing; an electrician interview adds motors, transformers and starters.
Do they give a practical test in a wireman interview?
Often yes: a small wiring job on a board or a joint, and reading a meter.
