MMV viva questions with answers
Engine
What is the difference between a petrol and a diesel engine?
Petrol: spark ignition, air-fuel mixture compressed, lower compression ratio. Diesel: compression ignition, only air compressed, fuel injected, higher compression ratio.
What is the function of a spark plug?
It produces a spark across its electrodes to ignite the compressed air-fuel mixture in a petrol engine.
What does the radiator do?
It cools the hot coolant from the engine by passing it through thin tubes and fins cooled by air.
Transmission and clutch
What is the function of a clutch?
To connect and disconnect the engine from the gearbox smoothly, for starting, stopping and changing gears.
What is free play in a clutch pedal and why is it needed?
The pedal travel before the clutch starts to disengage. Without it, the clutch can slip and the release bearing wears out.
What does a differential do?
It lets the driving wheels turn at different speeds on a turn, while still sending power to both.
What is the function of a gearbox?
To change torque and speed according to load and road conditions, and to give reverse and neutral.
Brakes, steering and suspension
Why is a hydraulic brake system bled?
To remove air from the lines. Air compresses, which makes the pedal spongy and the brakes weak.
What is the difference between disc and drum brakes?
Disc brakes clamp pads on a rotating disc and cool faster; drum brakes press shoes against the inside of a drum.
What are camber, caster and toe-in?
Wheel alignment angles: camber is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel, caster is the tilt of the steering axis, and toe-in means the front of the wheels points slightly inward.
What does a shock absorber do?
It damps the bouncing of the springs so the vehicle rides smoothly and the tyres stay on the road.
Electrical and safety
How do you check a battery?
Check terminals for corrosion, measure voltage with a multimeter (about 12.6 V fully charged), and check electrolyte specific gravity with a hydrometer on non-sealed batteries.
What does an alternator do?
It charges the battery and supplies electrical power while the engine runs.
What safety steps do you take in the workshop?
Use wheel chocks and stands, disconnect the battery for electrical work, keep the floor free of oil, and wear safety shoes and gloves where needed.
