ITI Fitter Viva Questions and Answers
In the fitter practical, the examiner measures your job and then asks how you made and checked it. Most viva questions are about measuring instruments, marking out, filing, drilling and tapping, and fits. Here are the ones asked most often, with short answers.

Fitter viva questions with answers
Measuring and marking
What is the least count of your vernier caliper and how is it found?
Least count = 1 main-scale division − 1 vernier-scale division. On the common metric vernier, 49 mm is divided into 50 parts, so least count = 1 − 0.98 = 0.02 mm.
How to say it: Then read the job size aloud from the instrument.
What is the least count of a micrometer?
Pitch ÷ number of thimble divisions = 0.5 mm ÷ 50 = 0.01 mm.
What is zero error?
When the jaws or anvils are closed, the zero lines do not match. A positive error is subtracted from readings; a negative error is added.
Why do you apply marking media before marking out?
Copper sulphate solution or marking blue makes scribed lines easy to see on the metal surface.
What is the difference between a dot punch and a centre punch?
A dot punch (about 60°) makes small witness marks along a line; a centre punch (90°) makes a bigger mark to start a drill.
Filing, sawing, drilling and tapping
Which file did you use for roughing and which for finishing?
A bastard file to remove metal quickly, a second-cut file to bring near size, and a smooth file to finish. Draw filing gives a fine finish.
How do you choose a hacksaw blade?
By the number of teeth per inch: coarse (about 18 TPI) for soft and thick material, fine (24 to 32 TPI) for hard and thin material. At least three teeth should be in contact with the work.
How do you find the tap drill size for an M10 × 1.5 thread?
Tap drill size ≈ major diameter − pitch = 10 − 1.5 = 8.5 mm.
Why are taps used in a set of three?
Taper tap to start, intermediate (second) tap to cut deeper, and plug (bottoming) tap to finish the full thread, especially in blind holes.
Why is cutting fluid used while drilling and tapping?
It cools the tool, reduces friction, gives a better finish and helps remove chips.
Fits and checking
What are the three types of fit?
Clearance fit (shaft always smaller than the hole), interference fit (shaft always bigger), and transition fit (can be either).
What is tolerance?
The permitted variation in a size: the difference between the upper and lower limits. 50 ± 0.05 mm has a tolerance of 0.1 mm.
How do you check flatness and squareness of your job?
Flatness with a straight edge or surface plate and feeler gauge, or against light; squareness with a try square.
Safety
What safety rules do you follow on a bench grinder?
Wear goggles, keep the tool rest within about 2 to 3 mm of the wheel, never use the side of a straight wheel, and stand to one side when starting it.
Why should a file always have a handle?
The pointed tang can pierce the palm if the file slips.

What questions are asked in the ITI fitter viva?
Least count and zero error of vernier and micrometer, marking out, file grades, hacksaw blade selection, tap drill size, types of fit, tolerance and workshop safety, plus questions on your job.
Will the examiner ask me to read a vernier?
Very often. Practise reading both a vernier and a micrometer quickly, and always check for zero error first.
What is the most important formula to remember?
Least count of the vernier (1 MSD − 1 VSD) and tap drill size (major diameter − pitch).
