ITI Practical Viva Questions and Answers

After your practical job, the examiner asks you a few questions face to face: what you made, how you checked it, which tools you used, and how you stayed safe. This is the viva. It is short, but it shows whether you understood the job or only copied it. The questions below are common to every trade; the trade pages have the specific ones.

How the viva works

The viva is part of the practical assessment. The examiner looks at your finished job and asks you to explain it. Expect four kinds of questions: about the job you just did, about the tools and instruments, about safety, and a few basic trade-theory questions.

Answer in short, clear sentences. If you do not know an answer, say so and say what you would check; guessing confidently is worse than an honest "I would check the manual".

About your job

What job did you make today?

Name the job and its main steps in order: marking, cutting, filing / wiring / welding, checking. Example: "I made a square fitting job: marked out, hacksawed, filed to size, drilled and checked with a try square and vernier."

How to say it: Speak the steps in the order you did them.

How did you check that your job is correct?

Name the instrument and the reading: "I checked the size with a vernier caliper, it is 50.02 mm against 50 ± 0.05 mm." For electrical jobs: "I tested continuity and insulation resistance before switching on."

What was the most difficult step and how did you handle it?

Give one honest example, such as keeping a surface flat while filing or tracing a wiring fault, and what you did to correct it.

What would you do differently next time?

One improvement: better marking, a finer file for finishing, checking earlier and more often. It shows you understand your own work.

Safety

What safety equipment did you use?

Name it: safety shoes, apron or overall, goggles, gloves where needed, ear protection near loud machines, a welding helmet for welding, insulated tools for electrical work.

What is the first thing you do if someone gets an electric shock?

Switch off the supply or pull the person away with a dry insulating material (dry wood, plastic). Do not touch them with bare hands. Then give first aid and call for help.

Which fire extinguisher is used on an electrical fire?

A CO₂ or dry chemical powder extinguisher. Never water on live electrical equipment.

Why must the workshop be cleaned after work?

Chips, oil and tools on the floor cause slips and cuts; clean tools last longer; the next trainee starts safely. Housekeeping is part of safety.

Tools and trade theory

What is least count?

The smallest reading an instrument can measure. Vernier caliper: usually 0.02 mm. Outside micrometer: 0.01 mm. A steel rule: 0.5 mm or 1 mm.

What is the difference between accuracy and precision?

Accuracy is how close a reading is to the true value. Precision is how close repeated readings are to each other.

What is preventive maintenance?

Planned checks and servicing (cleaning, lubrication, tightening, replacing worn parts) done before a breakdown, to avoid stoppages.

What is 5S?

Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain: a workplace method to keep tools and areas organised and safe.
